VITAMINS AND DIATARY SUPPLEMENTS
VITAMINS AND DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS
Note: This subject is not in Dr. Jacob's book. Dr. Dr. Stanley W. Jacob, MD, treated his patients with MSM as a treatment agent. However, people can use MSM as a nutritional supplement and get the same benefits observed by Dr. Jacob.
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, National Institute of Health, Office of Dietary Supplements website gives the following general Safety and Risk caution on supplements.
Safety and Risk
Many supplements contain active ingredients that can have strong effects on the body. Always be alert to the possibility of a bad reaction, especially when taking a new product.
You are most likely to have side effects from dietary supplements if you take them at high doses, or instead of prescribed medicines, or if you take many different supplements. Some supplements can increase the risk of bleeding or, if taken before surgery, can change your response to anesthesia. Supplements can also interact with some medicines in ways that might cause problems.
You can see this here:
As you have noticed, I refer to the MSM supplement as MSM nutritional supplement because I believe that it is not part of a diet but a necessary nutrient to provide us with our sulfur deficiency. This has also been advocated by Dr. Earl L. Mindell, R.Ph., Ph.D. in his little booklet "The Miracle of MSM".
With what we know, whatever diet you may be on will not change the fact that our food does not contain the amount of sulfur needed by our body
As we saw already in Dr. Jacob's research report and on this website, the reason we need MSM as a nutritional supplement is because our diet lacks sulfur rich food. Many supplements sold on the market do not have any bearing on our body’s need.
Here I want to emphasize the difference between vitamins and most dietary supplements on the market compared to MSM the essential sulfur nutritional supplement.
As we already saw, Dr. Jacob in his clinical research, and other scientists in the last twenty years other published studies have observed that MSM has a toxicity comparable to water and much lower than even table salt. So, it is extremely safe, and one does not have to worry about its intake dosage risk. If one takes too much MSM, what the body does not need or cannot process just goes out in your body waste.
Some of the trace minerals which all together account for less than 0.1% of the body weight can be life threatening if taken in a higher amount than what is needed by the body. As you will see below, many vitamins and dietary supplements can be harmful if taken in too large a quantity.
ANOTHER VERY IMPORTANT POINT TO MENTION HERE IS THAT MSM IS A PURE MOLECULE AND DOES NOT HAVE A SHELF LIFE. JUST AS TABLE SALT THAT IS ALSO A PURE MOLECULE (NACL) DOES NOT HAVE A SHELF LIFE.
The majority of vitamins and supplements have a shelf life just like all medications.
VITAMIN B3 - NIACIN:
In the vitamins and dietary supplements, one has to be careful not to take too much. Niacin also called vitamin B3 is often used to control high cholesterol levels but can create vision loss if taken in large dosages. Luckily, seems like discontinuing the use of the vitamin reverses this side effect on the patients vision.
A report based on new research and published in Nature Medicine on February 19, 2024, found that excessive amounts of niacin raise the risk of heart disease by causing inflammation and damaging blood vessel. One can see the report here:
The following five paragraphs were published on NBCNews.com, after the above report.
The recommended daily allowance of niacin for men is 16 milligrams per day and for women who are not pregnant is 14 milligrams per day.
About 1 in 4 Americans has higher than the recommended level of niacin, said the study’s senior author, Dr. Stanley Hazen, chair of cardiovascular and metabolic sciences at the Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute and co-section head of preventive cardiology at the Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute.
The researchers currently don’t know where to draw the line between healthy and unhealthy amounts of niacin, although that may be determined with future research.
"The average person should avoid niacin supplements now that we have reason to believe that taking too much niacin can potentially lead to an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease,” Hazen said.
Currently, Americans get plenty of niacin from their diet since flour, grains and cereals have been fortified with niacin since the 1940s after scientists discovered that exceptionally low levels of the nutrient could lead to a potentially fatal condition called pellagra, Hazen said.
The report shows the importance of keeping an eye on one’s niacin intake. MSM’s anti-inflammation properties may protect you in case of an overdose of niacin.
MSM is a sulfur substance already made by our body's metabolism. However, because of our diet’s lack of sulfur rich food, Dr. Jacob's over thirty years of clinical experience has demonstrated that MSM is an important sulfur nutritional supplement that one should take with no harmful side effects to our body.
This means that MSM will increase the body's production of taurine together with all the other known MSM's benefits without any risk of heavy metals.
It is suggested to take 2,000 to 8,000 mg MSM daily in the form of crystals or capsules to assure your body gets all the sulfur it needs. Dr. Jacob recommends starting with the lower dose and increasing slowly as you go until you reach the level to give you some comfort without side effects. I personally take 20-25 grams of MSM daily. Some people with chronic diseases take up to 75,000 mg or 75 Gr of MSM daily to have the level of life that makes them comfortable. Just remember that MSM is known to have only two unpleasant side effects, observed in more than thirty years of clinical experience; loosening of the stools and headaches in cases of extremely high doses that very few people will ever have to reach. However, if you ever experience one of these side effects, just reduce the dosage a little until the side effect disappears.
Below is a table that shows the most important minerals and elements by percentage of body weight. There are hundred and two known minerals and the element oxygen that are needed for the good functioning of our body.

It is important here not to confuse the little booklet by Earl L. Mindell, RPh., Ph.D., titled "The MSM Miracle" published in 1997 before the publication in 1999 by Dr. Jacob of the book "The Miracle of MSM".
Dr. Mindell is the author of fifty-nine books on health and nutrition including the Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible and has an authoritative opinion on vitamins, dietary supplements, and the lack of minerals including sulfur in our lives.
Dr. Mindell’s booklet gives his opinion on the value of MSM as a sulfur nutritional supplement needed by our body. Whereas Dr. Jacob’s book reports on his first twenty years of clinical experience treating over twenty thousand patients with MSM and his observations of MSM's health benefits.
For example, people take Turmeric or Glucosamine-Chondroitin as dietary supplements to relieve their joint pain which both have not been used in clinical experience. And both come with known side effects whereas MSM does not have any side effects.
TURMERIC:
Turmeric comes from Asia and many of the sources include toxic elements (heavy metals) which are part of the low water quality of the regions.
GLUCOSAMINE:
Glucosamine must be taken with some other chemical components that have not been evaluated for their side effects on the body.
ASTAXANTHIN (OFTEN REFERRED TO AS “ASX”)
Astaxanthin is produced naturally in the freshwater microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis and the yeast fungus Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous (also known as Phaffia rhodozyma).
Astaxanthin has several essential biological functions in marine animals, including red orange pigmentation, protection against ultraviolet (UV) light effects, communication, immune response, reproductive capacity, stress tolerance, and protection against oxidation of macromolecules.
Marine animals who feed on algae, such as salmon, red trout, red sea bream, flamingos, and crustaceans (shrimp, krill, crab, lobster, and crayfish), subsequently reflect their red orange astaxanthin pigmentation.
Because of its molecular structure, ASX’s unique features seem to support its potential use due to its antioxidant properties in promoting human health, in heart health, in cancer, in joint pain, and in skin care. The prohibitive cost of purified astaxanthin has limited its use in further studies and cancer treatments.
However, most of the research published on this agent has been done in Asia where astaxanthin has been used, but none of the published research establish a connection between its use for the terrestrial animal body functioning. Unlike MSM which is a constituent of every living organism including marine and terrestrial animals.
As a dietary supplement, astaxanthin is produced chemically like most dietary supplements and medications. Does a portion of the astaxanthin dietary supplement metabolizes into MSM with other minerals in the terrestrial animal body? To give the effect that it provides the same benefits as MSM does.
Most USA supplement companies manufacture this product in daily serving sizes of 4mg to 24mg with the majority having a daily serving between 10mg and 15mg. All these dosages are much higher than most authorities accepted safe dosages as shown below.
As a dietary supplement, the European Food Safety Authority has set an acceptable daily Intake of less than 8 mg a day of astaxanthin for an adult person, as of 2021. This means this authority consider a larger dosage to be harmful. One does not have to worry about dosage with MSM.
The USA does not regulate food supplements dosage.
In the USA, astaxanthin has been approved as an additive for fish feed only as a component of a stabilized color additive mixture. This increases the red color of farmed fish due to the fact that farmed fish do not eat algae that the wild fish feed on. This is why some farmed salmon looks much redder than the wild one due to the difficulty to obtain the same hue.
However, what is important here is that there were never any long-term clinical trials as the ones done with MSM to achieve similar projected health benefits provided by MSM which is already a natural constituent of our body.
FULVIC ACID AND SHILAJIT:
Fulvic acid is considered a humic substance, meaning it is a naturally occurring compound found in soils, compost, marine sediments, and sewage. This is taken from this website: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/fulvic-acid
Which means that it is not part of any living organism.
Unlike as demonstrated by Dr. Stanley W. Jacob, M.D., F.A.C.S., with over 30,000 patients, in over thirty years of clinical experience, and over six hundred peer reviewed published studies by hundreds of other scientists; MSM a constituent of every living organism is already a constituent of our body by itself found in the adrenal glands, in the blood and in the urine of humans and animals.
Part of the MSM taken as supplement also metabolizes into four amino acids, methionine, cysteine, cystine, and taurine, and many proteins used in the animal and human body’s functioning that provide some of the benefits mentioned in the shilajit products advertisement and in the Oral Shilajit Supplementation published article below.
That fluvic acid and shilajit are used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine does not mean much if they cannot identify why it helps the health conditions it is supposed to help. My own opinion is we already know that there is MSM in all soil and in the sewage from human and environmental waste.
The plants take their MSM from all soil, but with the help of the sun, the plants increase the MSM’s soil concentration in their own body.
So, is it the minuscule amount of MSM in the soil or in the other medium where they get the fulvic acid or the shilajit from that provide the benefits attributed to their product? If so, why not use our pure MSM, which is ten times less expensive, without the heavy metals risks, and gives more health benefits for your buck?
My problem with this supplement is that yes, it may help in many of the health conditions mentioned in their product advertisement. Just as there exists what is called urine therapy used in treatment of some health conditions as one can see in HYPERHIDROSIS. Because it was eventually found that urine contains a small amount of MSM.
However, the shilajit published studies have been done on less than 100 subjects and in periods of twelve weeks to four years. The material/supplement used in the studies contains heavy metals with dangerously high health risk that could be more detrimental to one’s health than its claimed benefits. It is the same material/supplement that is sold on the market with what is called accepted heavy metals levels, but with long-term side effects that have not been established.
Our MSM made under the distillation process is 99.9% pure with no trace of heavy metal. MSM made under the crystallization process in Asia may also contain heavy metals.
More importantly, nowhere in the shilajit or fulvic acid studies do the researchers make the biological connection of the supplement with any animal or human body active component like in the case of MSM mentioned above.
Please see the following study on Oral Shilajit Supplementation:
Because they are very loosely regulated, one must also understand that dietary supplements side effects and their interaction with other supplements or medicinal drugs can be as unpleasant and sometimes as debilitating as the medicinal drugs interactions and side effects. This is the reason for the caution from the U.S. Office of Dietary Supplements website mentioned at the beginning of this section (paragraphs 2 to 6).
One does not have to worry about this with MSM, an already constituent of our body, proven by over thirty years of clinical experience and over six-hundred peer reviewed published studies by hundreds of worldwide scientists.
VINEGAR
I believe that we should consider vinegar as a needed dietary supplement.
Vinegar comes in many different forms and does not have a shelf life if kept in a cool, airtight, and dark area, and it does not need to be refrigerated.
Fruit vinegar like apple cider vinegar seems to have more healthy benefits including helping blood sugar management, reducing Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) symptoms, helping in weight loss, and improving digestion.
Just like in most vitamins and dietary supplements, one must be careful with the dosage. The most recommended dosage for apple cider vinegar is between one to four tablespoons a day. It is also recommended to rinse your mouth with water if you drink your daily dosage in only a few glasses a day to protect your teeth’s enamel.
As for me, I drink two tablespoon a day, but I drink it with my prepared minimum daily fluid intake of over sixty-four ounces, and I eat a good number of vinegar marinated food, olives, pickles, beets, and hard-boiled eggs.
